// ARCHIVE — CONTRIBUTOR RIGHTS
YOUR STORY STAYS YOURS.
The History Archive records real people's memories — grandparents, neighbours, witnesses. That is a responsibility, not a resource. These are the rules we work by, in plain language, and they bind us before they bind anyone else.
OWNERSHIP
01Your story stays yours. When you contribute a video, photo or memory to the Archive, you keep full ownership of it — we never take it, buy it, or claim it.
Because your video lives on your own YouTube channel, you hold the delete button at all times. What you give us is permission to list, watch and reference it — nothing more.
CONSENT
02Nothing enters the Archive without the recorded person agreeing to it. Before you press record, ask the person — out loud, on camera if possible — whether they are okay being recorded and archived.
That spoken "yes" is the consent. If someone hesitates, refuses, or is unsure, the answer is no — and that is the end of it. No story is worth someone's discomfort.
CONTRIBUTOR RIGHTS
03Every contributor can ask, at any time: to see what we hold about their contribution, to correct a name, date or place we got wrong, to know where their story has appeared, and to be credited the way they want — by name, by first name, or anonymously.
Asking costs nothing and needs no reason. One WhatsApp message is enough.
WITHDRAWAL
04Changed your mind? You can withdraw a contribution at any time, for any reason, no questions asked. WhatsApp +254 747 924 886 or email info@boondockslab.co.ke with the link or title, and we remove it from the Archive listing.
Because the video lives on your own YouTube, deleting it there removes it everywhere at once — our listing goes dead and we take the entry down too. Withdrawal is permanent and free.
PUBLICATION
05Nothing is published anywhere without your agreement on where it appears. Submitting a link to the Archive does not mean it goes on our social media, in a film, or in any public screening.
If we ever want to feature a story beyond the Archive listing — a screening, a documentary, a post — we ask first, specifically, and wait for a clear yes.
FAMILY RIGHTS
06Some of the most important voices in the Archive belong to people who have passed on, or who can no longer decide for themselves. In those cases, family can speak for them.
A close relative can give consent on their behalf, ask for a story to be corrected or credited properly, or ask for it to be withdrawn. Family outranks the Archive, always.
PAYMENT
07The honest version: the Archive is volunteer-run. The points system pays out because the Lab funds it directly, and when it cannot, we will say so openly rather than go quiet.
If a future project brings funding — a grant, a partner, a commissioned series — contributors will be told exactly what applies before anything is recorded. No surprise terms after the fact.
VERIFICATION
08Every submission is reviewed against the Standard before it earns points or a place on a shelf: name, place and date spoken aloud, a watchable recording, a real person who agreed to be in it.
Memories are credited to the teller and the recorder, exactly as submitted. If two accounts of the same event differ, we keep both — the Archive records what people remember, not a single official version.
PRIVACY
09Unlisted stays unlisted. Your link, your phone number and anything you tell the archive desk are never published, sold or shared — they exist so we can credit you and pay your points.
The full detail of what we collect and why lives in our privacy policy — linked below this card and in the footer.
READ THE PRIVACY POLICY →▲honest note: this page is a commitment, not a lawyer's document. kenya's data protection act still applies in full, and so does our privacy policy — if anything here ever conflicts with the law, the law wins and we fix the page.
// QUICK ANSWERS
BEFORE YOU ASK
Who owns a story I contribute to the Archive?
You do — always. Your video stays on your own YouTube channel, and you can delete it at any time. The Archive only lists and references it with your permission.
How do I withdraw a contribution?
WhatsApp +254 747 924 886 or email info@boondockslab.co.ke with the link or title and we remove the listing. Deleting the video from your own YouTube removes it everywhere at once. Withdrawal is free and permanent.
Will my story be published publicly?
Not without your agreement. Unlisted links stay unlisted. If we ever want to feature a story in a screening, film or post, we ask first and wait for a clear yes.
Can family act for a relative who has passed away?
Yes. A close relative can give consent, correct or credit a story, or ask for it to be withdrawn on behalf of someone who has passed or cannot decide for themselves.
